Chris Wheeler, e-mail 3/12/02. Beryl,
In Richard, we both have an amazing and fascinating ancestor! I am so glad
to hear that he ended up safe and well in Australia. I did not know what had
happened to him and feared he may have died in jail in England. I believe he
was not transported!
My initial information about the Douglas family indicated that Bloomfield's
father was Archibald or Alexander. Bloomfield's marriage certificate stated
that his father was "William Douglas - Army". I hunted high and low for
Richard in the Army year books and couldn't find him. I decided to get help
from a professional and she frankly opened a huge 'can of worms'. I will
copy my notes this evening and email them to you tomorrow.
In broad outline, Richard got into debt at an early age and probably married
Mary Johnson (about 8 years older than him) for her money. It would appear
that he fell for Julia, ran off with and married her whilst he was still
married to Mary. Sadly, he ended up in Fleet debtors prison and divorce
proceedings followed along with litigation over the interpretation of
certain wills. Bloomfield and his two brothers (by Mary)went to boarding
school in London and were permitted to visit Richard at Fleet debtors
prison. Things went from bad to worse and he and two of his sons by Julia
were charged with swindling traders of their goods. He was a real life
Micawber. Richard got sentenced to a year in prison and two of his sons,
three months each. He kept a diary and some of the extracts were reported in
the trial and make fascinating and, if they were not so sad, comical
reading. The trail for me ended with the prison sentence and I had no idea
he ended up in Australia.
I have formed quite an attachment to Richard and feel like celebrating that
he served his time and started a new and happy life in Os with Julia, the
woman who he obviously loved and who stuck by him through all of this.
Nothing like a happy ending! It was said at his trial that he posed as "Sir
Richard". There was a Sir Richard, but it wasn't our Richard. It was Sir
Richard Glode, his uncle, after whom Richard must have been named.
Richard's father was James, chaplain to Geo IV and it may be that Richard
got into debt trying to keep up with the courtier set. I have been told that
he would have been in an impossible situation, being a gent with no money.
It would seem that in those days going out and just getting a job was not
really an option for a gent. He was, according to the copy sentence record I
have, 6' 1" tall which I think in his time was very tall. Julia's maid
described him in the divorce proceedings as a very fine looking gentleman. I
have some information on Julia Bree who was of course mentioned in the
divorce proceedings.
I very much look forward to hearing about Richard's life in Os and wonder
whether Bloomfield had anything to do with Richard ending up in there.
Have you followed the line back from Sir Marmaduke? I found him on a web
site last night and ended up going back all the way through the Plantaganet
Kings to Normandy. I was just clicking away and am not sure whether the
trail started with Marma's wife or his mother. It was late at night and I
wasn't too sure whether I was dreaming! Are you sure about the Douglas link
to him? If so, you (and me!) are directly descended from Edward I and all
the other Plantaganet Kings of England and the tree goes back at least to
the 1100's.
I should very much appreciate the source of your information on the two
Alexanders. I have been in touch with Jonathan Kirton (of Canada)who has
been researching the Kirtons for some 30 years. He has provided me with some
wonderful information on that side of the family which I will gladly pass on
to you. My wife and I went up to Swaledale recently to stay in Oxnop Hall
where our mutual Kirton ancestors lived. It is still a working farm with 11
b&b rooms. The countryside is stunning up there in the Dales.
Many Kirtons were tried and convicted for being RC recusants and had lands
confiscated in consequence. Jonathan has managed to get copies of their
petitions for the return of their estates and should be able to advise as to
how we get similar information on the Douglases.
I was shocked when I learned about Richard, but he has turned out to be my
most interesting ancestor by far. Because of his exploits there is a huge
amount of information about him, much of which I have not begun to tap. I
feel I almost know him having read so much about him and am genuinely
pleased to discover his story has a happy ending.
I look forward to hearing from you and will dig out all my stuff to send to
you in the morning. Likewise, I should appreciate all of yours. It will be
fascinating to campare notes! I would also very much like to find other
cousins as you are the first I have found with an interest in the Douglases.
I take it you have not come accross any of your Kirton cousins. I can
introduce you to a couple!
Kind regards,
Chris.
John Douglas:
Fourth son of Thomas and Martha Douglas, according to "Smith MS 40 76" at the Society of Genealogists.
Of Caldecot Hill, Harrow and St. George's, Hanover Square. Father of three sons and six daughters. It is through his youngest son James that the family tree runs.
Won the Oaks the second time it was run with a mare called Teetotum.
CW found an entry on page 53125 of Boyd's London Inhabitants as follows;
"John Douglas of S Lawrence Jewry
Married 1731 Apr 29 at St Benet Pauls Wharf Bp London Mge Lic
Wife: Mary Gardner of Croydon Surrey
daughter of Gardner
Profession etc.
1731 of S James Westminster
Children
John Leigh bap 1733 May 15"
In his birth record in the IGI, his name is spelled John Duglass.
James Douglas:
Baptised at St. George's, Hanover Square on the 17th January 1753.
Third and youngest son of John Douglas of St. George's, Hanover Square. He was placed early in life, with an eminent manufacturer at Middleton, Lancashire, near the seat of Sir Aston Lever, who was forming his famous museum. Instead of attending to business, he assisted Sir Aston in stuffing birds, and was removed to a military college in Flanders where he gained a reputation by translating a French work on fortifications. Another account, however, states that he was employed by his brother abroad as an agent for the business and was left without resources in consequence of some misconduct.
He afterwards entered the Austrian Army as a cadet, and, at Vienna became acquainted with Baron Trenk. Being sent by Prince John of Liechtenstein to purchase horses in England for Turkey, he jocularly observed that he thought his head grinning on the gates of Constantinople would not be a very becoming sight. He did not therefore return and exchanged the Austrian Army for the British service.
He obtained a commission in the Leicestershire Militia during the heat of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars which began in 1793 and continued until Napoleon's fourth and final defeat at Waterloo in 1815.
Leaving the army, he determined to take Orders and entered Peterhouse, Cambridge. He is said to have taken an MA degree, but his name does not appear in Graduate Cantabrigenses.
In January 1780, he married Margaret, daughter of John Oldershaw of Rochester. In the same year he was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and entered Holy Orders.
The early part of his Ministry was at Chedingfold, Sussex. On the 17th November 1787, he was instituted to the Rectory of Lichborough, Northants, on the representation of Sir William Addington, and towards the close of that year, he was appointed one of the Prince of Wales chaplains. (Prince Regent).
He resigned Litchborough in 1799 on being presented by the Lord Chancellor, through the recommendation of the Earl of Egremont, to the rectory of Middleton, Sussex.
In 1803 he was presented by Lord Henicker to the Vicarage of Kenton, Suffolk. The closing years of his life were spent at Preston, near Brighton, where he died and where his tomb can be seen today.
In 1797 he contributed to Nicholls, Leicestershire, a delicate plate of Coston Church, engraved by himself. He also engraved the well-known portrait of Francis Gosse, the antiquarian.
His known works are:-
1. General essay on military tactics with an introductory discourse, etc., a translation from the French of J.A.H. Guiloux. ? 2 vols. London, 1781.
2. At the British Museum. Travelling anecdotes through various parts of Europe. In two volumes and written much in the manner of Sterne and illustrated with characters and humorous plates draewn and etched by the author.
3. Dissertation on the antiquity of the Earth.
4. Two dissertations on the brass instruments called "Celts". These are pre-historic implements of stone and bronze which were used for digging.
5. Nenia Britannica. His own copy containing his original water colour drawings is in the British Museum.
6. On the Urbs Rutopae of Ptclomy.
7. Discourses on the influence of Christian religion on civil society. London 1792.
His burial record reads as follows:
"14 Nov 1819 James Douglas clerk, FAS formerly Peter House, Cambridge. Vicar of Kenton, Suffolk, Rector of Middleton, Sussex, Chaplain to HRH the Prince Regent and Curate of this Parish. Age 66."
Richard W. G. Douglas:
Family papers have named him Archibald, Alexander, and Richard Gloud. William Bloomfield Douglas's marriage certificate names his father as being William, occupation "Army". It is probable that W. Bloomfield Douglas did not want his children to know about their grandfather for reasons set out below.
Family notes describe him as follows:
"A friend of the Prince Regent. He was extremely handsome and is said to have posed for some artist for the figure of Christ.
Married Miss Johnson, daughter of the Reverend Charles Johnson who in turn married the daughter of Willes, the Bishop of Bath and Wells whose father was Lord Chief Justice Willes." The marriage took place on the 9th May 1815. It would appear that Richard was not of age when the marriage took place and that his wife Mary was several years older than him. Perhaps he had debts and married her for her money. One of the witnesses was Margaret Douglas, presumably his mother.
It would appear that he was the subject of bankruptcy proceedings. The CD index to the Times contains two references to Richard:-
Richard Wm Globe [sic] Douglas. Bankruptcy 19 Dec 1825.
RWG Douglas Bankruptcy 24 Feb 1848.
The first reference gives only a short summary of the Notice and states him to be of Woodcote, Sussex, coach proprietor.
The second gives rather more information:
Richard William Glode [sic] Douglas sued and known as Richard Douglas formerly of:
Woodside, Croydon
Eastbourne
Sion Lodge, Richmond
Aspenden, Herts.
Westledon, Suffolk
Gitton, Kent
Honfleur, France
Gilli Gavan, Denbighs
1 Lindsay Terrace, Chelsea
1 Globe Place, Chelsea
now of 14 York Chambers, George Street, Adelphi, Middx.
Interim order to be made 13 Mar 1848.
The bankruptcy file at the Public Record Office Kew [B3/1385] contains a large amount of information. It shows that Richard was aged 51 in 1850, his wife Mary, 58. It mentions Articles of Settlement dated 8th May 1815 and also a Chancery cause Douglas v Douglas current in 1850 - Mary and others [children?] plaintiffs.
Woodcote was at Westhampnett, [Nr Chichester]
London Gazette 14 Mar 1828 p 522
London Gazette 8 Aug 1826 p 1964
London Gazette 6 May 1826 p 1083
There are two lists of creditors, one of which is in respect of his minority amounting to £1,436.
There are various further copies of the London Gazette and statements by creditors but, unfortunately, no detailed examination as to his children or wife's maiden name. The file continues to 1856 but it is not entirely clear whether he was still alive at that date.
The Chancery proceedings appear to relate to the Marriage Settlement and presumably were brought by Mary to secure maintenance for herself and the children. There are references to the wills of the Revd. William Willes 21 Dec 1814 and Mary Seaman 24 Mar 1825. The Chancery suit Douglas v Douglas was "pending" in March 1926. There is also a reference to a Marriage Settlement from the estate of Chippendale.
One of the people who paid money into the bankrupt estate was Sir Richard Glode. Sir Richard Glode married Richard's mother's twin sister and was therefore his uncle. It would appear that Richard was named in honour of Sir Richard. An internet site for Dartford Cricket Club mentions Sir Richard Glode as follows:
"In the 1780's many of the cricketing gentry of West Kent used to meet to play on the Brent and organised themselves into a club called the "Dartford cricket meeting". Full scores of one of its matches v Stroud are preserved, the Dartford side including , among others, ... Richard (later to become Sir Richard) Glode from Orpington who started life as a journeyman bricklayer and rose to become a wealthy sheriff of the City of London..."
There is a somewhat confusing entry in the IGI as follows:
"Richard son of Richard William Glod and Julia Douglas baptised St Bride Fleet Street 31 May 1829. There is also a marriage entry for Richard WG Douglas to Julia at St Bride Fleet Street. Bigamy would appear to be the logical explanation as papers in the bankruptcy file refer to his present wife, Mary.
The Westhampnett Parish Registers [MF1171] contains the following entry:
23 April 1826 John son of Richard William Glode Douglas and Mary, Wood Cottage, Esq.
A number of other Times references present a rather gloomy picture. It would seem that Richard kept the courts rather busy:
17 Jul. 1829. Consistory Court, Douglas v Douglas. Suit for divorce by reason of adultery promoted by Mrs. Mary Douglas against her husband Mr. Richard William Glow Douglas. Adultery allegedly having been committed with a person named Julia Bree [See marriage record above. Presumably the court was not aware that Richard had actually married Julia.] The allegation was not opposed having been fully proved. Richard apparently claimed that his marriage to Mary was not valid or never took place and could not be proved as the only witness was now dead. The judge ruled that the evidence of the birth of the children was sufficient evidence that the marriage was valid and a separation was granted.
Notes of the divorce proceedings are as follows:
Proceedings were begun on 18 May 1829. Richard is described as a "debtor now in Fleet Prison"
The file contains copies of two marriage entries, an 1815 one and a later one 13 Mar 1817 at Churchill, Somerset. Apparently at the time of the original marriage Richard was not properly resident in the Parish for the purpose of the Banns and the second ceremony was in order to safeguard Mary's inheritance by validating the first Marriage. Richard seems to have contested the suit on the grounds that [a] the Marriage was invalid as he was a minor and/or [b] that it was not in fact hewho married Mary.
Julia [wife No. 2] was the daughter of the Revd. Robert Bree, a clergyman from Boulogne. Julia was the only surviving one of three daughters and lived with her father at Chichster from about 1824. Revd. Bree was curate of both one of the Chichester Parish churches and of "Woodcut". The Brees became friendly with Richard and Mary and their then 3 children. Revd. Bree's wife had died before they came to Chichester [when theywere living at Plymouth].
One of the witnesses against Richard was Julia's maid, Louise who described Richard as a "very fine gentleman". Julia was aged about 19 when they met.
For some reason Richard and Mary and the Brees moved to London [perhaps when Richards finances first started to get tricky]. Julia sent for her maid to follow her after "Papa" had discovered letters to her from Richard, by which time she was living with Richard who had left the mtrimonial home. Their first child, a girl, was born 13 Jan 1828 but died at 4 months old when they were living at Southend, Essex. Richard and Julia were living as Mr. and Mrs. William Smith". A second child, a boy was born about 7 weeks before 22 Jun 1829.
Richard was arrested for debt 2 Dec 1828 and taken to the lock-up in Chancery Lane. On the 30th December he was moved to Fleet Prison where Julia joined him.
Julia called Richard "John" or "William" or, by mistake in front of a witness "Richard". He called her "Ju" or "my love".
In Spring 1828 two of Richard's sons by Mary were sent to the school of Edward Flower at Upper Street, Islington. A third son was sent later. Alexander aged 10, Bloomfield aged 7 and John aged under 5. All three boarded at the school. The boys were taken on several occasions to visit their father in the Fleet where he was lodged at various times on the 2nd or 3rd storeys or in the top gallery.
At the time of his first marriage, Richard was living at the Portland Hotel, Duke Street.
His youngest child with Mary died about 18 months before the proceedings in 1829 and is buried in Islington.
Lady Glode lived at Bath and was aunt to Richard. Witness refers to his "sudden" marriage to Mary who he met at a Ball. He was intended to be a doctor but would have preferred to go into the Army, although there is no evidence that he ever did. The Margaret Douglas who witnessed his first marriage was his mother.
The judgement of the Court was that a divorce was to be granted but on condition that both parties thereafter remain unmarried. No reference is made to the "marriage" to Julia of which the Court was presumably ignorant.
31 Jan 1847. Willes v Douglas. Rolls Court, Westminster. Suit for the construction of the will of the late Miss Mary Seaman of Walcot, Bath dated 24 Mar 1825. She left money "after the death of her sister to Francis Willes Esq. and Revd. Charles Johnson junior in trust for her first cousins Mary Johnson [and others] separately and distinctly from their husbands and for their sole use and at their decease to their daughters". It was held this created a life interest only.
22 February 1848. Southwark. - Richard Douglas, alias Lord James Richard Douglas, a tall gentlemanly looking man, who claimed acquaintance with the leading aristocracy in the country, attended before Mr. COTTINGHAM on his recognizances, to answer a charge of felony, preferred agaist him on Monday last by Captain Aaron Smith, of Camden cottages, Camden Town. From the particulars which transpired on a former occasion, it appeared, that Captain Smith held a bill of sale on a quantity of plate, a dog cart, horse and harness, and other property of considerable value, in a house occupied by the prisoner in Shropshire; that when Captain Smith went to take possession, he found that the property had been taken away since the bill of sale was completed. Other circumstances of grave suspicion against the prisoner were mentioned , which induced the magistrate to remand him until yesterday. A report of the evidence appeared in the newspapers on Tuesday last, which caused a vast number of tradesmen to be in attendance at the examination, believing that the prisoner had obtained property from them in a suspicious way.
Mr. Wyld, the barrister, attended on the of the prisoner.
Mr. Smith informed Mr. Cottingham that since the last examination he had received a vast number of letters from all parts of the country, intimating that a person answering the description of the prisoner had obtained horses, carriages, furniture, &c., from them, and afterwards suddenly decamped with the property.
Mr. COTTINGHAM.- Have you any evidence to prove the transfer of the bill of sale?
Captain Smith.- I have not any person in London; but a solicitor named Garbett saw it signed and delivered, and was a witness to it; but he is in Shropshire.
Mr. COTTINGHAM.-If that is the case, there must be an end to the charge at present. Before I can proceed in it Garbett must be present, as he will be able to give proper evidence.
Mr. Thomas Chew, livery stable-keeper, Little Moorfields, city, stepped forward and informed the magistrate that he had a serious charge to make against the prisoner. In November, 1843, he came to him, and representing himself as Lord Douglas, said he had a hunting-box at Eastbourne, in Kent and that he wanted to hire a pair of horses for a short time, giving a reference to Mr. Wells, a solicitor. He accordingly lent them to him, and a few days afterwards the prisoner sent a letter desiring to purchase them, at the same time requiring to know the price. On the 27th of December following he had another horse, when witness lent him a bridle and sadle. The last horse was returned, but he had not seen the bridle and sadle since, nor had he been able to trace any tidings of the prisoner until he had seen the account in the newspapers. He further added, that the dealing with the horses was a debt, but he should certainly charge the prisoner with stealing the saddle and bridle.
Mr. Wyld said, that the latter charge came upon him by surprise; he hardly knew how to answer it at present.
Mr. COTTINGHAM observed, that he had received communications from Denbigh, Chester, and other places. A gentleman named Williams had sent word that he would attend to prefer a charge of swindling against the prisoner if he was positive that he would be in attendance.
A solicitor attended from the latter person, and assured the magistrate that Mr. Williams could produce evidence of a serious nature against the prisoner. He held documents in his hand to that effect.
Mr. COTTINGHAM.- I hav others from Captain Atkinson, and Mr. Townsend, of St. John's, Wallingford, but at present the only direct charge of felony is that of stealing Mr. Chew's saddle and bridle. I, therefore, cannot allow the prisoner to go at large without good bail for his future attendance. If I allowed such a person to go at large it would be considered treat carelessness on my part, especially after the evidence of Mr. Chew.
Mr Wyld submitted that no charge of felony could be sustained against his client, as the bridle and saddle had been lent to him, and afterwards seized in execution.
Mr. COTTINGHAM said, that there was a specific charge of felony, for Mr. Chew heard nothing of the bridle and saddle for five years. He could, therefore, only deal with the case as others came before him. He should require the prisoner to enter into his own recognizances in [?????], and find two sureties in [????], each, to insure his attendance on that day fortnight.
Twenty-four hours' notice of bail being required, the prisoner was conveyed to Horsemonger-lane Gaol.
23 May 1849. Vice Chancellor's Court, Douglas v Willes. Questioned whether portions which any of the 9 children of Charles Johnson and Mary his wife were entitled under the Settlement of 1790 for £10,000 were satisfied by payments of benefits received from their father of his estate. Ruled that they were entitled to 1/9 of the settled fund notwithstanding any sums received.
27 February 1851. Marlborough. Arthur Douglas and Charles L. Douglas, two respectably dressed young men, were brought before Mr. HARDWICK, charged with having obtained a quantity of goods from Mr Henry Gabell hosier, No. ? Burlington gardens, by false and fraudulent pretences.
Mr Gabell said, - On the 7th of January last the prisoners drove up to his shop in a dogcart, and told him they had just returned from France, and had lost their portmanteau, containing all their linen and under clothing, and they wished to have a fresh supply from him. He told them it was not usual to give credit without knowing something of the person. They replied, their father was a respectable man, living in Kent, and he need be under no apprehension about his money. The prisoners then gave a list of articles which would amount to £??, observing that the order would be a very nice for him. The prisoners took away some articles, and one of the prisoners at that moment had on a necktie obtained from him. The prisoners gave the address No. 6 Belgrave terrace, Pimlico. Witness went to that address, and made inquiries as to the prisoners respectability. The servant replied the prisoners had occupied apartments in the house for some time, and were highly respectable. Witness then went on with the order, and sent in some of the articles. Some short time afterwards witness sent a further portion of the goods, but they were brought back. From certain other circumstances, which witness subsequently became acquainted with, he considered he had been defrauded, and has caused the defendants to be taken into custody.
Mr. HARDWICK asked where the false pretence was?
Mr. Gabell said it was not true that the prisoners had come from France and lost their portmanteau as described; nor were they as respectable as represented.
Mr. HARDWICK did not think the representations of the prisoners quite amounted to fraud.
Mr. Gabell asked the magistrate to hear what the police had to say.
Police constable Downing, D46, said, in consequence of innumerable complaints at the station house by tradesmen, who said they had been defrauded of goods by two young men, who answered the description of the prisoners. Witness looked after them, and succeeded in taking them into custody. The prisoners had defrauded Mr. Morrison, tailor, St. Paul's Churchyard, of a pair of trousers, and Mr. Morrison would appear at a future time. Several other cases would no doubt be brought against the prisoners, if remanded.
Mr. Hartley, bootmaker, King street, St. James's, said the prisoners and a third young mandrove up to his shop in a dogcart, and one of themsaid he wanted a pair of dress boots, to go to a ball in Kent. The prisoners gave name Douglas, but the one now calling himself Arthur assumed the name of Lionel. The other, calling himself Charles, said his name was Arthur. The third person, he believed, was at that moment in court (pointing to a young man who appeared to take a deep interest in the proceedings), but he would not swear to him. While witness was engaged in taking the order of his supposed customer, a pair of dress boots was nipped up by one of the parties. A second pair was also taken away at the same time. The prisoners ordered several pairs of boots to be made, and then left. The address given was 6, Belgrave place, not terrace, and of course the prisoners were not known there. Witness met the prisoners afterwards by accident, and then he got their address, 6 Belgrave terrace. Witness applied at the house, and was given to understand that either the father or the uncle of the prisoners lived there, who promised to see him paid. Witness had not been paid.
Mr. Cross, who attended for the prisoners, contended that the cases were nothing more than debts, and that no pretence existed for charging the prisoners with fraud.
Mr. HARDWICK could not take the same view of the case. He should require the prisoners to find good bail to appear again next Wednesday.
22 Mar 1851. Marlborough Street Court [magistrates].
Richard Douglas of 6 Belgrave Terrace a middle-aged man of military appearance posed as Captain Douglas and Sir Richard Douglas charged with obtaining goods by false pretences. The prisoner was the father of the two young men in custody for similar offences. Pleaded not guilty to obtaining a barometer value 3 guineas.
5 Apr 1851. Marlborough Street Court.
Richard Douglas otherwise Sir Richard Douglas, otherwise Captain Douglas, of Orpington House, Kent, Ascot Villa, Ascot; and 6 Belgrave Terrace, and his two sons, Charles and Arthur Douglas, charged with having, for a length of time, carried on a most successful system of obtaining goods from various tradesmen without the least means of paying for them, and in many instances by fraudulent pretences.
The constable Downing, who took charge of the two sons and got up evidence in many cases against them, has since their apprehension, ascertained that within two years the father and sons have succeeded in getting from between 45 and 50 tradesmen £3,702 worth of property. On the elder prisoner a diary was found which revealed a system of living by the wits unexampled for success, audacity, and extent. The diary for the year 1851 was kept in a business like manner. It opened with a list of the names of gentlemen and ladies to whom begging applications for money had been made, the names of the persons who had not replied to the applications being brought forward and posted in quite a mercantile way. The first day of the year was opened by a prayer to Providence to bless the exertions of the writer and his sons, and make them more prosperous and productive than last year. It went on thus:-
"Took possession of Ascot Villa. Got phaeton, dogcart, horses. Loked about Guildford, Staines. Ordered goods, coals and beer, shawls. Got a great coat from Skinner.
Jan 3. - Nothing came in. Charles hired dogcart and harness of Liley. Went in phaeton to Guildford. Ordered carpeting, shawls, coats, &c.
" 4.- Nothing from Guildford but an impudent letter. Sent Charles to station for carpeting. Williamson there, and stopped it. Fear there will be a row. Got shawls.
" 5. - Phaeton and horse seized. Fear exposure at Ascot, and all up with chance there. Fear we must cut.
" 6. - Coals and beer came in. Made us as merry as could. Went to shop in Curzon Street. Ordered brushes &c.
" 7. - All day ill. Row about stable. Forcible possession taken of it. Row all day with one person or another. Fearful how things will end. Three boys at home idle. All ordering things.
" 14.- Not a shilling coming in. 11 mouths to feed. Would not order things except to keep my children. They have my address in Guildford. Dreadful rows. Got carpeting. Fearful row with man who bought an iron safe. Row all night from ringing door bell by boot and shoe man.
" 16. - Row all day with people. Mob outside of house crying "Swindler."
" 17. - Very nervous. More rows.
" 18. - Went to boys dinner - champagne - very merry. Providence not quite deserted us"
The rest of the diary was nearly to same effect.
The capture of the elder prisoner was effected under rather remarkable circumstances. The prisoner wrote a pathetic letter to the Rev. Mr. Hamilton imploring assistance, being confined, as he said, to a sick bed, and in a state of complete destitution. The police gained a knowledge of this letter, and, as every attempt to capture the prisoner had failed from the precaution, taken to keep the police out of the house, teh following stratagem was adopted:- Police sergeant Allen, B 3, dressed himself in a long black robe, white neckcloth, and broad-rimmed hat, with the view of rendering his appearance as clerical as possible. With an open letter in his hand, he knocked at the door of No. 6, Belgrave-terrace, and when the door was opened on the chain, to an enquiry what he wanted, he replied, in a subdued tone, he called to see a brother in affliction. The door was instantly opened, a smartly dressed lady came forward, and, saying, "The Rev. Mr. Hamilton, I presume?" begged him to walk in. The lady ushered him into a backroom, arranged carefully so as to present the appearance of severe want and destitution, and there, on a truck-bed and little straw mattrass, reposed the prisoner, writhing, or appearing to do so, with pain. The constable, in a tone of commiseration, asked if he addressed Captain Douglas. The prisoner feebly replied he did, and he presumed he was speaking to the Rev. Mr. Hamilton. "Not exactly," said the constable; "my name is Allen, sergeant of the B division of police." The lame man jumped nimbly out of bed, and, in the voice of a Stentor, roared out to his wife that "he was betrayed." The constable then told him his errand, and took him to the station house. The room in which the prisoner was taken was prepared was prepared for the occasion, as the rest of the house, a large one, was abundantly and handsomely furnished.
The additional evidence yesterday was as follows...
April 15th - Central Criminal Court
Richard William Dougass, 52, labourer; Charles Lionel Douglass, 19, clerk; and Arthur Douglass, 18, also a clerk, were indicted for conspiring to defraud Matthew Gooch. The Defendants, who are father and sons, are of genteel though somewhat shabby appearance. The elder defendant, who seemed unwell, was allowed to be seated. The particulars have already appeared in our police reports.
The jury found the two elder defendants Guilty, and acquitted the younger one.
The two younger ones were then again for obtaining two pairs of boots, valued at £5., by fraud, from Joshua Hartley.
The jury found them both Guilty.
The father said he was innocent of any intent to defraud.
He had brought up eleven children, and had endeavoured to instil in their minds priciples of religion and honesty.
The three defendants all wept very much, and seemed to feel very keenly their degraded position.
The Recorder, in passing sentence, said that it was impossible not to see that there had been a deliberate scheme to defraud. A difference would be made with the sons, who might be supposed to have acted under their father's advice.
The father was sentenced to twelve, and the sons to three months' imprisonment.
The description of him when he was sentenced in 1851 to a year in prison, indicates that he was 6' 1". tall. Most of those sentenced on the same day ranged in height from 4' 6" to 5'6".
20 Feb. 1854. Vice Chancellor's Court. Sir WP Wood referred to "Douglas v Douglas" as being a special case.

Ray Feeney. Beryl,
My research is very loose I have to admit (lack of time to
research). Have not confirmed but believe Charles Donald's first
marriage was on 9 July, 1854 to Harriet Youngman at St Matthews,
Ipswich, and Charles Allan was the first child, born in ?1857,
followed by Reginald and Arthur. Maybe some "cousins" can confirm
this. Second marriage was to Elizabeth Slater and from this marriage
came Rose Agnes, William, Edith and Alfred, Third marriage to
Elizabeth Susan Francis, children Alice (Constable) 1882, Ellen
(Parish, Jowett) 1884 and Florence (McMackin) 1888, who I believe
from my mother-in-law and her sister, was very worldly and
travelled / lived in America.

From Barbara Turner, 1992 (see note 1)
The third fleet of 11 ships arrived in 1791, with over 2000
convicts. The newspaper report states that 194 male convicts and
4 female convicts died during the voyage, and that though
conditions on board ship weren't as "diabolical" as the previous
year, they were still outrageous.
The convicts from Ireland who arrived on board the "Queen"
are not included in the newspaper lists.
As before, the list was compiled in London as so there is no
way of knowing which people died on the voyage out, or did not
leave England for any reason.

The New Holland Morning Post of 18 October 1791 is a fictitious
newspaper which appeared as a four-page "composite newspaper" in the
Sydney Daily Mirror on Tuesday 4 March 1969. In the article which
announced the publication, the Mirror advised the newspaper, one of a
series of two covering the Second and Third Fleets, was "compiled by
Cirrel Greet from information provided by the Public Library of NSW
and particularly its Archives Department" (now State Records (NSW)).

Sorry Beryl, it's John Alfred (I get confused with the Jack and John, Mum

b1922 are the birth children of John Alfred Daden and Clara Maxwell..this is
what I have so far,
Constance Violet Eugenie Stephen b1869 dApril 11,1932 married George Thomas
Daden b1856 d1911 on Feb.25 1888 at Newtown Sydney NSW their children were :

10.Eileen born 1909 died 1999? (Eileen Daden married Robert Maxwell my
mothers brother) Elsie Daden also married another Maxwell called Alver
Maxwell, she was in love with Walter Maxwell but he was killed in the War he
was only 22, she then married his brother Alvey or Alver different names on
NSW BDM.the only Daden's I met when I was growing up was Aunty Eileen..and
even then I did not realise that she was my mother's father's sister, I have
only found out about the Daden/Stephen family in the last few years because
of tracing back with the help of Mum, who unfortunately passed away April
this year..Mum used to say there was a hanging judge in the family, so I
started searching the internet and found Chief Justice Alfred Stephen who
was also a Judge..and from there it all started, when I told my mother she
would give me a little bit more information then I would search again and
kept finding all this interesting information about the Stephen family..
Constance's mother Ada Victoria Paget Douglas b1843 dApril 5, 1914 married
Francis Henry Stephen b1839 dFeb 25,1876 on July 16,1859 their children were

Ada's first husband died February 25, 1876 and she remarried John Warby on
June 8, 1876 at Cooktown Qld.(John Warby b1836 d June 5, 1912) from what I
have gathered so far, children of this marriage are
1.William,
2.Fanny bFeb 26,1880 dMay 21, 1884
3.Francis Victoria b 1881,
I am still trying to fit things together, please let me know if you have any
different information that I can compare with what I have.
e-mail revieed 23/8/04:
I have Ada's marriage certificates and death certificate, so will do.. Ada's first husband was Francis Henry Stephen without the s, b1836 d1876.
I'm not sure if you know but he was the son of Francis Pasmore Stephen b1804 d1837and Frances Ester Shadforth b1805 d1873, Francis P Stephen was the brother of Chief Justice Alfred Stephen, you will find plenty of info on Alfred on the internet, not much about Francis P unfortunately, there is bits and pieces here and there to do with court, he was a Barrister, Proprietor and Editor of the Australian Newspaper. Francis Henry, Ada's first husband was Registrar, District Court Maitland. he is buried at C of E cemetery,Campbell's Hill, West Maitland and from what I have gathered in an unmarked grave as Francis Harry Stephens, same date of death same age so I'm pretty sure it's right...Francis Henry died in unusual and sad circumstances in February 1876. Ada remarried John Warby in June 1876.. John Warby is another interesting one ..>

Daley, Three Months by Sea to Darwin. THREE MONTHS BY SEA TO DARWIN
Governor's A.D.C. And His Wife As Pioneers
FREEMANTLE GALLEY SLAVES
Nurtured amid refinement, a girl was taken from her Adelaide home to help in pioneering the Northern Territory more than 60 years ago. This is the story of her experiences, told by her son.
By D. D. Daly, grand nephew of Sir Dominic Daly, former Governmor of South Australia.
In April, 1870, shortly after the return of Mr G. W. Goyder's surveying expedition in which my father took part, my grandfather Captain W. Bloomfield Douglas was appointed Resident of the Northern Territory of South Australia, as it was then called. He had held various appointments in South Australia for nearly 20 years, such as Harbormaster, Collector of Customs, and President of the Marine Board. He had a family of seven, ranging in ages from two to 19 years, and it was a great wrench for my mother, the eldest, and her sister, aged 17, to leave their many friends and old associations in Adelaide - especially as they had only recently "come out" and had been going to balls and parties at Government House - and go into what was practically exile.
The Government had bought a fast sailing Canadian-built schooner, originally meant for a slaver, the "Gulnare," of about 200 tons, for the use of the Northern Territory; and in this little vessel, my grandparents sailed, with their family and a nurse, for their future home.
At Port Darwin the great news was that an agreement had been concluded between the British Australian Telegraph Company and the South Australian Government to bring Australia into telegraphic communication with, not only the mother country, but the whole world. The voyage, including the three weeks spent at Brisbane, had taken nearly three months, a difficult thing to believe in these days of rapid transit in luxurious liners.
The first rude home
The new Resident and his family found it hard work at first to make their new quarters at all home-like; for they consisted only of very rough huts, and the accommodation was very limited for so large a party. The sleeping apartments were in a large log hut divided by partitions. The spaces between the polls were plugged with "paper bark,” a species of gum tree whose bark is nearly white and peels off in flakes. Their roof was bark also, and indeed, this material was called into requisition very freely throughout the settlement. The floors were made of mud, pressed flat and mixed with gravel, sand and limestone.
Windows of glass were unknown; they were only frames filled with unbleached calico swinging on a pivot, and there was only one sitting-room, a galvanised iron hut, always intensely hot throughout the day.
Riding expeditions were a great joy to my mother and her eldest sister, but before they were allowed to penetrate any distance into the heart of the country, they were taught revolver shooting. D-straps were fixed to their saddles, and they carried their weapons slung at their side.
At times, a shooting expedition was got up on Melville Island. Here, in 1825, Sir Gordon Bremer had formed a settlement, which, like the other attempts at colonisation on the coast, had been abandoned. The settlers had left buffaloes and ponies, and the numbers of these had, in the course of years, multiplied. Wild cattle also were sometimes seen here. The natives of Melville Island bore a very bad name at that time, and the Port Darwin blacks always maintained that “that fellow very bad one.” They used bows and arrows as well as spears. For all this, the shooting parties never came to any harm, and a little fresh buffalo meat for a change was most welcome.
Fixed First Transcontinental Telegraph Pole
After three months, everyone began to wonder when a ship would call in and bring news of the outer world. At last the Omeo, one of Meichan and Blackwood's steamers, came in early one morning and anchored in front of the camp, bringing the mails from Adelaide and a consignment of telegraphic material, together with the contractor and his men for the overland cable. Before a week had elapsed, on September 15 1870, the first telegraph pole was fixed; and the honor of doing this, amid a gathering of the whole little community fell to my mother.
When the Omeo steamed once more out of the harbor, it was little realised that 10 months were to elapse before news or letters would be received again. My mother told me that the Franco-Prussian war was fought and finished before they even heard of it.
In September, 1871, my mother, who had been engaged for some time, sailed for Adelaide in the Omeo, which made a long passage, owing to the shortage of coal on board and an adverse monsoon. The ship's boats and every available piece of timber were used for fuel; then the Omeo had to put into Brisbane for coal.
After their marriage at Adelaide, my parents settled at Narracoorte for 10 months.
In The Gold Rush
After delays due to difficulties in completing the land line and the breaking of the cable between Port Darwin and Banjoewangle, the two ends of the transcontinental line were united and the first message came through from Adelaide to Port Darwin on August 22, 1872. The audacity of the enterprise was no less great than the success with which it was carried out; and the next development that declared itself, through the opening up of the telegraph line, was the discovery of gold in the Northern Territory.
My parents were keenly watching the progress of events in their quiet little township home. The Northern Territory had grown dear to them, in spite of the hard and isolated life they had experienced there; moreover, both of them being born pioneers, they decided to try their fortunes once more at Port Darwin, and, leaving Narracoorte, they took passages in the Omeo from Melbourne in September, 1872. Port Darwin had seemed to them far more distant from Adelaide or Melbourne than England, until telegraphic communication was well established.
The "Omeo" was crowded to excess with diggers bound, not only for Port Darwin, but for Northern Queensland also. There had been a fresh discovery of gold there as well. The voyage was uneventful, and they steamed into Port Darwin, where every landmark was familiar to them both.
Excitement And Reaction
The story of this gold rush was the same as that of many another, excepting that in a tropical country the difficulties and hardships were infinitely greater for the multifarious seekers of fortune. Provisions, of course, rose to a fabulous price. Flour was £20 a ton, and the prices of cartage varied with each teamster's demand - it never went lower than £20 a ton, but the men gave any price asked, even to have their pickaxes and swag put upon the drays.
Following the great and unhealthy excitement came a reaction. My father, who had known the Territory as a surveyor and as a land selector, came to the conclusion that unless the reefs were systematically worked by proper machinery, there was no future for gold mining at all. He, therefore, determined to return to Adelaide, in order to procure the necessary plant, and be one of the first to place it upon the goldfields. Alas! All his hopes of success were frustrated by the extraordinary bad luck which pursued him on this voyage. The story of the "Springbok" has already been told in these columns.
Leaving The Territory
The Territory now presented no further inducements for waiting for what seemed a far-off hope of success, and, as things were at that time at the very lowest step of depression, my father and mother decided not to remain there, but to return to Adelaide at the earliest opportunity.
My grandfather had been across to Singapore, and had received an offer of employment in the Government service of the Malay States, which he accepted, as his family were now growing up and had wearied of the hardships and lack of civilisation of Port Darwin. Thus ended our connection with the Northern Territory.
On October 4, 1873, my father and mother left Port Darwin in and 80 ton schooner, the Mary King, for Adelaide. Though my mother knew that they would be very uncomfortable, she persuaded my father to risk no further delay by waiting for the chance of a larger vessel sailing within a reasonable time.
My mother seems to have rather overestimated her powers of "roughing it" at sea, for she had not been on board more than 24 hours before she regretted having sailed in so small a craft. There was no proper accommodation for ladies, and no privacy. The only other passengers were disappointed diggers returning from the goldfields, and these were suffering a recovery from their many "farewell" bouts. As a matter of fact, they turned out to be goodhearted fellows on the whole, but at first the small deck was covered with these sleepy men, some of them afflicted with delirium tremens, raving and staggering within a few yards of my mother's usual seat; and of course, their language was the reverse of what ought to have reached a woman's ears.
The Galley Slaves
The route taken by the Mary King was around the western coast of Australia, and the Leeuwin, the longest and most uninteresting passage to choose.
The ship encountered some very rough weather. Provisions commenced to run short. The diggers grumbled at their rations,, and frequently threw them overboard. By degrees all the tinned meat came to an end, likewise the potatoes, and there was only salt meat, biscuits, and duff left. My parents had the same rations as the fo'c'stle hands. It was decided to run into Freemantle for provisions. For the last two days before getting into port, the fare consisted of flour and water, with the few raisins thrown in. Rum, somehow, held out to the bitter end. It usually does! That and ale were all they had to drink, as even the supply of tea had given out. It can be imagined how my mother longed for a cup of tea!
On reaching Freemantle, they found no fewer than six ships hard and fast ashore as the result of a storm in a harbor then exposed to the full force of the "southerly buster." They saw one fine barque lifted by the huge angry green rollers and thrown violently on a ledge of rocks.
As soon as the little schooner was more, harbor and Customs officers came off to her, their boats manned by convicts dressed in prison clothing, freely decorated with numbers and emblazoned all over with the ominous broad arrow. The unfortunate creatures were chained to the thwarts, and as they bent to the oars their fetters clanked in the most dismal manner. This was quite a novel sight to my mother, as her own colony, South Australia, had started free of the convict taint. Apropos of this, she used to relate the disagreeable ordeal that visitors from Perth used to undergo on their arrival during her girlhood at Port Adelaide. Before landing, police officers were bought the ship and required the passengers to produce a document partaking of the nature of a passport, signed by Western Australian authorities, to prove that they were neither convicts or time-expired men.
At last they neared home. Heading out St. Vincent Gulf, they passed landmarks of a country which had been familiar to my mother ever since she was four years old. The range of hills behind Adelaide drew nearer and nearer, and they were signalled from the Semaphore. Their many discomforts and hardships were soon forgotten in the joy of landing at Port Adelaide; and thus came to an end the experiences of two pioneers in the Northern Territory.

Subject: Re: descendants
Beryl,
I resticted my entries on the database to the descendants of my
grandfather Esmond Foster. His mother was Alma Douglas, one of
Bloomfield Douglases daughters by Ellen Atkinson. Alma was quite
young when her husband, Frederick Foster died and as a wealthy young
widow, she toured the world in style in a large chocolate coloured
Croxley car with matching chauffeur named Raisin.
I have not come across any other descendants of Bloomfield save of
course for Edward Douglas-Potter and I know nothing of his family.
Bloomfield's children spread about the world with varying degrees of
success and I know a number did not live long enough to have
families of their own. Two of his boys earned a living catching
animals in Borneo for zoos and I understand they both died young.
Harriet Douglas, who was pictured opening the Darwin to Adelaide
telegraph line, had two children, a boy and a girl. I have in my
files copies of articles they wrote that were published in the
Sunday Times about their life in Borneo including some amusing
asides about their grandfather Bloomfield's temperament and language
and his crocodile shooting activities. If anyone is interested,
Bloomfield left the Royal Navy to get involved in a campaign in
Borneo that led to one of Mary Johnson's brothers being made Raja of
Sarawak. The dynasty became known as The White Rajas of Sarawak and
a number of books, both factual and fiction, have been written about
them. It will be interesting to see whether Bloomfield gets a
mention in any of them.
Unless therefore Edward can point us at some more of Bloomfield's
descendants, I think the vast majority will be those I have entered
in the database as being descendants of Esmond Foster, who was
Bloomfield's grandson.
None of our Douglas ancestors that I have come across could be
accused of being ordinary. Does anyone know whether any of the
current crop might be regarded as extraordinary or eccentric?
Chris.
