Reminiscences of the Shaffery
Family - <Living>
Elizabeth was a frequent visitor to our house at Annerly. We used to watch for her to come walking up the road, laden with iced buns for afternoon tea. She never came empty handed. She was always cheerful asnd had many stories to tell of her busy life. My mother and all of the children loved her dearly. Her kindenss to Rose, who was her complete opposite in temperament, astounded me. In all weathers she would visit and house clean. Many time I thought Rose was healthier than Elizabeth but it was Elizabeth who did the work.
My sister Kathleen used to take the long tram journey to visit Elizabeth when she worked as a live in help for miss Gore Jones in Clayfield. She had a lovely home. We visited john in Proncess Alexander Hospital when was ill, and helped Elizabeth when he died. John gave his house at Norman park to Elizabeth, and we were at last able to visit her in her own home. My husband thew children and I mowed her lawn and helped her maintain her large yard. I remember the day one of our sons was helping ot pick up th eclippings and he quickly developed a huge blister that covered his back between his shoulder bladdes. He had asthma and skin problems but htis event alertyed us to how allergic his system was to certain substances." 128
