General Notes:
In April, 1870, shortly after the return of Mr G. W. Goyder's surveying expedition in which my father took part, my grandfather Captain W. Bloomfield Douglas was appointed Resident of the Northern Territory of South Australia, as it was then called. He had held various appointments in South Australia for nearly 20 years, such as Harbormaster, Collector of Customs, and President of the Marine Board. (See reference D.D.Daley)
From: "Chris Wheeler" Date: Fri Jun 11, 2004 12:32 am Subject: Bloomfield Hi, I saw in notes made by Harriet Douglas, (Bloomfield's daughter by Ellen Atkinson), that he went out to Borneo and served board the Royalist, in the service of the Raja of Sarawak. The Second Raja was Bloomfield's Uncle on his mother Mary's side.
Whilst out there, he became a friend of Sir Henry Keppel and sailed with him aboard the Dido hunting Dayak pirates. Harriet also wrote that Bloomfield was a talented artist and that he drew some of the illustrations for the ship's log. I was looking at a web site about the Rajas of Sarawak and in the bibliography was the following:
"KEPPEL, Henry, Sir, The expedition to Borneo of H.M.S. Dido for the suppression of piracy, with extracts from the journal of James Brooke ... [1845 proof edition, unpublished, British Museum]"
It would seem pretty likely that Bloomfield was on this expedition and I will see if the Museum can dig it out for me to look at. Perhaps it will contain some of Bloomfield's illustrations.

Hi,
I have information about the ancestors of Mary Johnson, RWGD's first wife, and in particular, the Willes family. As Jeremy Foster and I are at the moment the only members of the group descended from Mary, I propose just to record that it is available if requested by anyone. Hopefully more of Mary's descendants will join in due course. Those I know of live in Australia, South Africa and the UK.
I also have information on the descendants of Alma (one of Bloomfield's daughters by Ellen Atkinson), who married Frederick Thomas Pearce Foster in Hong Kong in 1881. Likewise, I will happily provide this if requested. I very much agree with Beryl that no information about living people should go on the Internet without their express consent.
In answer to a point raised by Beryl, according to some notes made by his daughter Harriet, Bloomfield died in Nova Scotia, Canada in 1904.
I knew nothing about Bloomfield's first marriage to Annie Maude McDonald. Any further information and in particular, the date and place of the marriage would be much appreciated. Do we have any of Annie's descendants in the group or does anyone know of any? Before he married Ellen Atkinson, Bloomfield sailed aboard HMS Wolverine to China under the command of his uncle John Johnson (Mary's brother) and then set off to Borneo to hunt pirates. I am amazed he had time then to marry Annie and produce six kids before marrying Ellen in Alnwick in 1848 aged only 26. He was still at it in 1884 aged 62. Sailors!!
Sian and I plan to visit Alnwick soon and will report back. There is still a coastguard station there. I will try to find out whether it was Bloomfield's one. Alnwick Castle was occupied by the Percys, historical enemies of the Douglases. Does anyone have a spare claymore?
Chris.
