bullet  General Notes:

She and Richard left their home to come to Australia, 1853

Julia was the only surviving of three daughters, of the Rev. Robert Bree. She first married a William Teasdale, but this marriage was short-lived.

When she met Richard Douglas when he was married to Mary Johnson, and there were three children of the marriage. Julia was about 19 years old when they met. She was living with her father, and the Brees became friendly with the Douglases. The two families moved to London together. By this time Richard had already suffered financial problems and had been bankrupt. He had been assisted by his aunt, Lady Glode.

A romance began between Richard and Julia, but was discovered by her father when he found letters written to Julia by Richard. Julia called her maid (Louise) to come to her in London.

Mary and Richard had their last child Jasper in 1827. In May of this year Julia and Richard were living together as Mr. and Mrs Smith in Campden. This when Julia fell pregnant. Richard finally left his marital home in January 1828, the month of the birth of Julia's first child on 13 January 1828. Unfortunaley this child, a girl, died at the age of 4 months

When her husband was arressted for debt and imprisioned, Julia joined him in the lock up in Fleet Prison.
Julia called Richard "John" or "William" or, by mistake in front of a witness "Richard". He called her "Ju" or "my love". On 31st May 1829 Richard and Julia were married at St. Bride, Fleet St. This was a bigamous marriage since Richard was still married to Mary.

A second child, a boy was born to Julia about 7 weeks before 22 Jun 1829. This boy also died in infancy.

In 1829 Mary sued for divorce on the grounds of adultery with Julia. The judgment of the Court was that a divorce was to be granted but on condition that both parties thereafter remain unmarried. No reference is made to the "marriage" to Julia of which the Court was presumably ignorant.

In December 1829 Richard and Julia married again - this time legally. They had another 8 children between May 1830 and October 1844.

She migrated with Richard to Australia, where they started a new life. Se lived with him in Sydney, but when he left for the newly independant colony of Queensland in 1858, it is not clear whether she went with him.

Richard died in Queensland in 1862. Julia remarried to William Norton on 21st Nov 1865.

She died after seven days in hospital, with morbis cordis, and ascites. She is buried in the Church of England section of the cemetery - probably the "Sand Hills" Cemetery in Sydney,
This cemetery was moved to Botany to make way for the building of the central railway station. Many pioneer graves were relocated to the new cemetery. 6,12
