General Notes:
1841: Thomas who is 30yrs is living at Fogo Berwick with wife Mary who is 25yrs. They are shown as having the children George 10yrs; Robert 7yrs; Thomas 5yrs and Jessy 3yrs and Agnes 1yr. 1881: Thomas is widowed and 77 years of age and is farming at Minto, Wellington North, Ontario. Living with him is his son James, daughter-in-law Jennet and four Grandchildren.
Thos., Mary and their three youngest children emigrated from Scotland c.1855 on a sailing vessel that took 1 mo., 9 days -their eldest 3 sons had preceded them by a year -every family member became seasick on the crossing with the exception of Jessie, their daughter, who was able to care for the others -the Crows had been crofters, with Kelso their market town in the Scottish lowlands - they rested a few days at Quebec on arrival, before travelling to Scarboro Twp., where they wintered with a sister of Mary's, Mrs. Swan (this would be another dau. of Geo. Thomson) - Crows farmed 200 acres near Streetsville (lot 2, conc. 5, Toronto Twp., Peel Co.) for their first 9 years in Canada West - then they purchased 200 acres in "the Queen's Bush" (lot 12, w. ½ 13, w. ½ 14, concs. 17 & 18, Minto Twp., Wellington Co.) where sons George and Thos. Jr. spent the winters clearing land and building first a log house and then a frame house (1859,1864) the latter for their parents and siblings - when Thos. Sr., Mary, James & William moved in 1864, the sons walked from Streetsville to Minto, driving their stock - daughter Jessie had married a Scarboro Twp. farmer so stayed behind, as did Robert who was working as a blacksmith in Scarboro Twp. - son James bought the east half of lot 14, conc. 17 which already had a small frame house on it near the road, on the east side of the lane - our copy of the crown deed granted by Queen Victoria to Thomas Crow, yeoman, on 13 Jan 1874 (for lot 12, conc. 18, Minto) was obtained from the Land Records Office, Toronto in 1981 (N.B. Thos. Sr., widower, was living with James and Janet on the 1881 Minto census and gave his religion as Methodist.) 43
Thomas married Mary THOMSON, daughter of Unknown and Unknown, on 20 Nov 1828 in Duns, Bew, Sct. (Mary THOMSON was born about 1813 in Bew Sct 43 and died in Apr 1873 in Minto Wellington Ont Can 43.)
