Morton DouglasThe copy of this photo came from Beryl. Keith Shanklin Douglas's wife has the original photo. She says "Evie" is Evelyn Graham who was later to be Gerald's second wife. Jill Hogan says the boys could be Keith and Gerald, two of Morton's Grandchildren.Jill says : Regarding the property of "Nelia Ponds". The main house was built out of cedar & for many years it was the showplace of the district. It is situated about 5 km from the Rail Head of Nelia & the actual property begins at the railway line& stretches to the Flinders River. At one period when the Flinders River was in flood my father had to swim across it to deliver the mail to the other side to the properties on that side of the river. Up until the age of 5 I had lived at this property with my mother & father. My father was living & working with his brother Gerald until not long before his death when he had to come to the Greenslopes Repatriation Hospital where he died in 1953.Nelia Ponds is a pastoral holding near Julia Creek. |
Jill Hogan has the original of this photo.Jill writes: This is “Nelia Ponds“ Homestead ,about 5km from the Nelia Post Office. This was the show place of the district & the timber in the house is cedar. This house is about 100 years old & was built by Morton Alfred Douglas. The property was running sheep but when Gerald & my father were, there it was slowly converted to all cattle-Braham Droughtmaster cross. Aunt Evelyn would stock only black cattle & would always get the best prices at the markets, which annoyed the other graziers in the district. |

Bev Connaughton took this photo. She says Julia Norton (wife of Richard William Glode Douglas )is buried in the Anglican Section of the historic Rockwood Cemetery in Sydney. It's the grassy area above the shadow and beside the headstone that's lying down. Unmarked unfortunately, but the the names of the graves either side of it identify it. |
